Dakota Dunes Resort - September blog - fall getaways at Dakota Dunes - canoeing and the sky

September 2, 2026

Autumn may be one of the best times to experience the outdoors in Saskatchewan. The days are still warm, the evenings arrive early enough for fires beneath the stars, and the prairie landscape begins its spectacular transition from summer green to fall gold.

Fall getaways at Dakota Dunes offer the perfect opportunity to experience the season at its best. Around Dakota Dunes Resort, the rolling dunes shift to shades of amber, the South Saskatchewan River Valley glows in the softer autumn light, and cooler temperatures invite you to get outside, explore, and stay a while.

Dakota Dunes Resort is an Indigenous-owned destination on the traditional lands of the Whitecap Dakota Nation, just 20 minutes south of Saskatoon.

Here, contemporary resort experiences, the natural beauty of the South Saskatchewan River Valley, and opportunities to connect with Dakota culture combine to create a getaway unlike any other in Saskatchewan.

Adventures Await

Our pedal-assist eBike rentals offer a fun and effortless way to explore the stunning landscapes around Dakota Dunes Resort. Ride through rolling dunes and prairie grasses, enjoying the views of the South Saskatchewan River Valley at your own pace.

With pedal assist, hills and longer distances are easier to manage, making eBikes perfect for couples, families, and friends looking to explore together. In the fall, as the prairie turns golden and the air cools, riding an eBike is a fantastic way to experience the season at Dakota Dunes.

If you love the water and feel revived just being near it, our canoeing adventure is for you!

For a completely different perspective on the season, take to the water on a guided canoeing adventure along the South Saskatchewan River. The three-hour experience offers spectacular views of the river valley as the landscape begins its fall transformation.

Each excursion includes the necessary gear, an experienced guide and a picnic lunch to enjoy along the shoreline — giving you time to slow down and experience the valley from a perspective few visitors get to see.

September is one of the most spectacular times to experience Dakota Dunes Golf Links. Set among the natural dunes and rolling prairie of the South Saskatchewan River Valley, the course takes on a whole new character as the landscape turns golden and cooler temperatures make for ideal days on the fairways.

Known for its dramatic setting and memorable links-style design, Dakota Dunes Golf Links offers a round that feels distinctly Saskatchewan — expansive skies, sweeping views and a landscape that is as much a part of the experience as the game itself.

Whether you’re squeezing in a few more rounds before the season ends or planning a fall golf getaway with friends, this is a course worth experiencing in the gold.

Authentic Cultural Connections

September also offers the opportunity to participate in cultural traditions that nourish the spirit and build strong connections to the land and the history of the Whitecap Dakota Nation, which are central to every guest experience.

Fireside Bannock & Stories

With earlier evenings and cooler temperatures, it’s the perfect time to join us beneath the stars beside a bonfire for bannock and stories.  Guests at the resort can sit beside a welcoming fire and dine on fresh bannock, accompanied by regional teas and jams, all while listening to Dakota stories and teachings.

The Dakota Dunes Cosmic Dome

Our eight-metre geodesic Cosmic Dome offers an immersive 360-degree exploration of the night sky.

We pair modern projection technology with Dakota oral storytelling traditions to vividly bring star stories to life.

If the night is clear, our guided telescope stargazing adventure allows families to identify constellations and gain insights from both contemporary and Indigenous perspectives on the universe.

Cultural Sharing with Whitecap Elders

Guests interested in connecting more deeply with the land and history of the Whitecap Dakota Nation can arrange private sessions with a respected Elder in advance, subject to availability.

These meaningful encounters provide a rare chance to hear personal stories, learn about local history, and receive traditional teachings passed down through generations.

Gather and Savour: Moose Woods Home Fire Grill

After a day of riding e-bikes, canoeing, or golfing, make a few more memories as you and your loved ones gather around the table for a special meal.

At Moose Woods Home Fire Grill, a refreshed menu brings new flavours to the table this fall:

  • Warm Garlic Bread Knots: A new shareable starter featuring garlic butter, melted Monterey and cheddar cheeses, and Parmesan, served with a smoked tomato marinara.
  • Rigatoni Stroganoff: Tender bison and beef tenderloin tips served with cremini mushrooms, roasted shallots, garlic confit, crème fraîche, and dill pickle.
  • Prairie Bison & Beef Stew: Slow-braised bison and beef tips served over herb-mashed potatoes, topped with cocoa nibs, hemp, and garlic crumbs, with a spruce-tip-infused braising jus.

A New Season of Wellness is Coming

This fall also marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter at Dakota Dunes Resort. On December 4, 2026, Dakota Dunes Thermal Spa will officially open to the public.

Rooted in the land and inspired by Dakota values of connection, balance and renewal, the adults-only Thermal Spa will invite guests to move through a thermal journey of heat, cold and rest, with nine thermal and cold pools, sauna and steam experiences, spaces for relaxation, treatments and dining.

Whether you’re visiting us this fall or planning a winter escape, there’s now another reason to return to Dakota Dunes.
